Transforming buildings for mission

Transforming Stories

Chippenham - Gillingham Omagh - Oundle - Shenley - Ewyas Harold

Gillingham Baptist Church in Kent was built in the 1880ís with its main worship area on the first floor with access by a very steep set of steps. Although a lift was installed in the 1970ís it was inadequate and well past its sell by date. A further problem was that the tired look of the facade had convinced many people that the place was closed!

For these reasons, at the end of 2014 the Church took the decision to begin planning for a major refurbishment of the church frontage. We employed a firm of architects to redesign the front of the building to project a welcoming face to the community. Integral to that new entrance is a 13 person lift which would provide access to all levels of the building. New toilets would be created at the first floor level, and offices located on the ground floor. Our vision is for a building which is open and accessible throughout the week and which facilitates the mission of the Church.

The total cost of the work including professional fees was around £800,000 and Baptist Building loaned £250,000 towards those costs. The building work has now been completed and the photos show the new, welcoming look to the front of the building as well as the interiors of the new lobbies on the ground floor and first floor
